Leadership
EMPOWER
Northeastern’s Research Development Enterprise and the ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development have identified a need to bolster our professional development offerings for mid-career faculty, particularly with respect to applying for and winning large, prestigious grants. This new program, Enhancing the Mid-career Professoriate, an Organizational Workshop to Elevate Researchers (EMPOWER), is designed for mid-career faculty who show promise to lead the next generation of large-scale research or training programs (for example NSF/NIH centers and training grants).
This session will not take you through the mechanics of a large proposal submission – you can read that. This workshop will (1) connect you as a cohort, (2) introduce you to a network of people who have successfully done this and who can be resources for you in the future, and (3) motivate you as an individual.
This workshop will reveal the unspoken “hidden curriculum” (a collection of unspoken tactics, values, and behaviors) behind many successful large proposals. Usually, the hidden curriculum comes from mentors, but the mentoring landscape is variable, especially for women and historically-marginalized populations.
ReDI Leadership Program
The Research Leadership Development Initiative (ReDI) is a 6-month program that supports the leadership development of Northeastern faculty through a rigorous program led by Deb Franko and the ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development.
After completing a 4-day intensive skill-building workshop in May 2025, cohort members participate in three “How the University Works” seminars throughout the fall semester, during which participants learn from administrative leaders about institutional priorities and the innerworkings of the university. Presenters shared their own career journey, discussed their role, and provided insights into their leadership practices.

Culturally Aware Mentor Training
This training is hosted by ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development and led by facilitators from the Center for Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER).
Research shows that culturally diverse teams outperform and out-innovate culturally homogenous teams, and lead to better science. But addressing cultural diversity can be daunting. Designed for mentors who have already taken basic mentor training, this awareness-raising workshop helps mentors identify their personal assumptions, biases, and privileges that may operate in their mentoring relationships. Through group discussion, case scenarios, and role play, mentors have the opportunity to learn and practice culturally aware mentoring skills with their peers. Developed through NIH support, this workshop focuses on the racial and ethnic diversity within the United States (including activities that deal with systematic oppression and racialized violence) and in the biomedical sciences. One can easily extrapolate core concepts to other aspects of cultural identity and other audiences.
